one on one with the coach
1. Why the name Coach AJ?
Well, it all has to do with branding. Just wanted a different and unique name.
2. How did you start?
I started by tagging along a with a team that used to go for missions in High Schools. After interacting with students and hearing their challenges, I got a burden to commit myself fully to making a difference when and where I can.
3. What are some of your highlights/memorable moments in your career?
Wow, I’d have to write another book if I was to go all out on this. Some that come to my mind are weekend challenges, engaging principals, launch of A.T.L program at Kamiti and the many testimonies I get from people I’ve interacted with.
4. What are some of the challenges you encounter?
One of them is time. I always feel like there is so much to do and very little time. Another challenge is getting to make event-oriented people see the necessity of having follow up programs.
5. What are some things you’d love to see in schools?
First and foremost, Life Skills education should be taken seriously. There is no single career choice that does not need the application of life skills.
It shouldn’t be ‘just another lesson’.It’s really sad that some schools have scrapped it off and in other schools the ones handling it either lack passion or are not in touch with the reality on the ground. Secondly, more boys’ schools need to embrace training, pastoral, and various capacity-building programs. My friends in the field can attest to the fact that out of every 10 schools we visit 7 of them are girls’ schools. Generally, girls’ schools accord more time for such. You’ll hear of whole day programs, out of school retreats and weekend challenges; something very foreign to some boy’s schools.
6. From your experience, what are some of the common challenges that students face?
While visiting different schools, we managed to take students through assessments. From the information we gathered, we were able to tabulate the results. Actually, my book TOP 10 REASONS WHY STUDENTS DON’T ACHHIEVE THEIR FULL POTENTIAL is basically feedback from students. Some of the challenges are: Home and family related issues, lack of seriousness, lack of motivation, sex and sexuality related issues, poor/average reading habits among many others.
